Old-Growth Forest Ecology Walk on has been postponed indefinitely due to flood damage.
This event now has a waitlist.
Continuing our series of hikes led by recognized local experts, our September outdoor program will be led by Gary Kauffman, USDA Forest Service Botanist/Plant Ecologist. Some of you may remember Gary from his 2019 presentation and hikes featuring the serpentine barrens near Franklin. Those of us participating were treated to a spectacular assortment of unique and unusual wildflowers. For 2021 Gary will take two groups to the Big Ivy on September 28 and October 15 with a focus on old-growth forest ecology.
We will explore several forest patches representing different forest types, showing the special characteristics of old-growth stands, including some fascinating tree epiphytes, bryophytes, and lichens. Gary will also point out some rare plant species found in the area, although these aren’t specific to old-growth forests. There is not enough room for more than 4-5 cars along the route, so after meeting at 9:00 am at the Publix in Weaverville, we will carpool to Big Ivy. Our convoy will make several stops with a series of short hikes, mostly moderate in difficulty (but not strenuous) and some off trail. In total we expect to hike between 1 and 1.5 miles. We will break for lunch at around noon before continuing our explorations in the afternoon. Bring lunch, water, a walking stick, and a hand lens. Rain gear may be appropriate if the forecast warrants.
Due to the car sharing and close quarters, this event is offered for vaccinated members only and limited to just 15 participants. Consistent with the latest CDC guidance masks must be worn while sharing vehicles but will be optional outdoors. If you would like to join us please send your name and the number of participants
to outdoorprograms@brnnetwork.org. Registration will close when all available slots are filled. You will get a response within a day or two confirming your registration. About one week before the event you will receive a follow-up email with additional details. Hope to see you there!
