Table Rock Wesleyan Camp Outing with Ron Lance
14 naturalists traveled to South Carolina to learn from Ron Lance, Land Manager for the North American Land Trust at Table Rock Wesleyan Camp and Retreat Center which has over 200 acres of land.
Ron not only knows the common and botanical names of the plants, but also which plants were good to to eat and when to eat them. An example was the Silver Bell (Halesia Carolina) fruit that is a 4-winged pod-like green fruit.
We spent most of the morning on the Palmetto Trail and all of us we amazed at the beauty that was around us. We walked through fern glades, hop-rocked over a creek and even did a little climbing up a hill. A few even ventured further to see a beautiful cascading waterfall.
Of course, there was discussion about trees; which were good for lumber, were more or less common in South Carolina, and of course, how to identify them by their bark alone.
Ron is always so gracious with his time, having led outings for us and many other botanical groups. For those of you who were not able to attend, we will be inviting him to lead us on another tour next year.
