BRNN Mushroom Walk – Tuesday, August 1, 2017.

The Blue Ridge Naturalist Network had its first mushroom walk led by BRNN board member Charlotte Caplan on Tuesday August 1, 2017. Twelve of us hiked along a gentle, quiet trail behind the Davidson River Fish Hatchery in the Pisgah National Forest. We found and identified 56 different mushrooms. Charlotte showed us how to examine each mushroom and noted their key features. As we hiked along Charlotte explained to us the role mushrooms have in forest ecology. It was a beautiful sunny day and we all learned a lot.

Astronomy Presentation: Tuesday, July 11.

Mr. Arghiere, an observer of three total solar eclipses, will share his experiences, including why you should travel
the short distance out of Asheville to see totality. He will discuss how and where to best observe the eclipse safely. What to expect during the brief 2½ minutes of totality, the Sun’s Chromosphere and Corona
(both visible during a total solar eclipse), and the celestial mechanics of how and why total solar eclipses even occur.
5:30-7:00 pm at the West Asheville Library. Open to the public.
