Purchase Knob Butterfly walk. This event was canceled thanks to Tropical Storm Irma. We will reschedule for next year.

Join the Blue Ridge Naturalist Network for a butterfly walk at the top of Purchase Knob located in the Great Smoky Mountains along the Cataloochee Divide. We will gently hike through meadows and woodland edges with Gail Lankford as our butterfly expert looking for late summer butterflies. We will begin the walk at 10:00 am from the Appalachian Highland Science Learning Center located at the top of Purchase Knob. Read more

BRNN Mushroom Walk – Tuesday, August 1, 2017.

The Blue Ridge Naturalist Network had its first mushroom walk led by BRNN board member Charlotte Caplan on Tuesday August 1, 2017. Twelve of us hiked along a gentle, quiet trail behind the Davidson River Fish Hatchery in the Pisgah National Forest. We found and identified 56 different mushrooms. Charlotte showed us how to examine each mushroom and noted their key features. As we hiked along Charlotte explained to us the role mushrooms have in forest ecology. It was a beautiful sunny day and we all learned a lot.
